Fundamental Questions
  1. What is the Credo of Sleep Sheriff ?

What is the Credo of Sleep Sheriff ?

Sleep Sheriff is a strong brand for a mindful approach towards baby sleep coaching through bonding and gradual retreating.

It is an icon for a method that has been developed by a father with loving logic.

As father of our generation, you see and feel a mother while she is pregnant, witness her lose her figure, go through birth with her, share countless hours of breastfeeding, experience her emotional roller-coasters, research hormonal causes for her emotional highs and lows, and support her to get the body and life back she once had.

Father to twin boys and a girl, Alexander Springenschmidt lived through all that and decided to make up for at least a fraction of what his wife has been through.

He took on the evenings, nights and mornings with the babies and gave her back the sleep she thought she would never get again.

But soon he had to face his limits as he felt the effects of sleep deprivation on their relationship, on his job, on their babies, and on himself.

In the course of researching books, websites, articles and blogs, he realised he was not alone.

But he found little advice on gentle sleep coaching, on how to interpret what the baby needed, and how to differentiate different sorts of crying.

Neither did he come across a method of how to actually help the baby fall asleep alone in the crib in the room with no sad crying.

In developmental psychology he crossed paths with two terms that instantly became the cornerstones of his approach: bonding and gradual retreating.

Bonding pretty much includes everything on interpreting the baby's needs by mindfully reading the cues we are given.

Gradual retreating takes these cues into consideration as we slowly move away from the baby while strengthening the bond by sending out love and the ever present message of "I am always there for you".

It did not take long until he had his twin boys sleep through the night and he finally got the sleep he needed.

His wife's nipples soon got back to normal as sleep coached babies do not suck for comfort or to fall asleep.

Their relationship was back on track and they soon enjoyed days with natural routines and evenings with each other or their friends, as sleep coached babies nap and sleep anywhere when it's time to.

"You guys are so lucky, your babies sleep so well!" - "This is home-made. I sleep-coached them." Many conversations followed about babies in need of sleep coaching, countless questions and answers sessions, until Alexander finally realised that he knew quite a bit on the topic.

The advice he gave worked for most babies of his friends and their friends throughout the past six years. Nicknamed Sleep Sheriff, he called his method gentle sleep coaching.

  3. Can you give it to me in a nutshell please?

Can you give it to me in a nutshell please?

The only way to ensure that your baby will fall asleep by himself after waking up, is if he initially falls asleep alone, in his crib in his room, with no support.

As long as your baby falls asleep with supports, you'll have to get up at night and resupply them. Help your baby learn to fall asleep by himself and if he wakes up he will fall back asleep while you sleep.

Put him down drowsy, but awake. Assure him that everything is okay and walk out of his room with love as he starts dozing off.

If your baby wakes up in an environment different from when he fell asleep, your baby will not fall asleep again without help. This is the fact that you want to understand and remember. You want your baby to fall asleep alone in his room in his crib. No boob, no bottle, no singing, no petting, no anything at all.

Feel free to calm your baby down in whatever way you choose. Sooth him, pet him, nurse him, give him the bottle, sing to him, but whatever you do, stop it as soon as your baby gets drowsy.

Once you notice him signals, put him down and let him doze off as you walk out of the room with a "sh sh" or a calming one liner. All your baby needs at night is loving parents and air to breathe.

The point is that in order to help your baby fall back asleep by himself, you have to be ready to re-create the exact same setting from when he fell asleep. If you want to make it easy for your baby and yourself, let him fall asleep with no support, so you don't have to re-create anything. No breast, no bottle, no dummy, no singing, no rocking, no anything. Just love.

  4. Is there a key point list?

Is there a key point list?

This list here is a checklist for you to see if you remember the key points of the app and the ebook.

If you want Sleep Sheriff to do his job, we encourage you to click through the app and read the eBook. It does not take too long and is worth countless nights asleep. The eBook takes a bit longer to read than the app, but with its detailed descriptions it is an invaluable learning tool.

    Preliminaries

I have read The Manual and know what to do and am ready to do it.

I have adopted a mindset that leaves no doubt that I am doing the right thing.

I have matched my baby's routine with one of the suggested schedules, or tailored my individual schedule.

I have prepared my baby's room so it is dark, quiet and has the right temperature.

I have created the time and space I need to coach my baby for at least one week.

    The room

I have prepared a dark room with very dim light and no exposure to direct light when opening the door.

I have taken care that the room lets in no noise from outside and its door opens and closes silently.

I have turned off all electric devices so there is no more stand by light.

I have all I need handy (diapers and wipes, bottle, light dimmer, etc.).

I have numerous fluorescent dummies in the corners of the crib for easy access, and have a backup stash.

I have prepared his snuggler (and have a backup stash incase I lose or wash them).

I have the snot sucker ready and have lifted his mattress so he can breathe easily in case he has a clogged nose.

I am informed about homeopathic treatments. (Optional)

    The techniques

I know how to put him down on his belly for all sleeps in his stroller and crib.

I have trained my petting technique.

I have trained my stroller technique.

I have decided on a schedule for meals, naps and sleep.

I have decided on our rituals before naps and before bedtime.

I have read up on homeopathic medicine and prepared a homeopathic kit.

I wear a digital watch with brightest possible backlight to walk in and see enough but not to disturb him.

    The important points

Most babies sleep through the night until 6 weeks, and then have a natural sleep routine, which they lose after 4 months.

Coach your baby as soon as possible, preferably by 4 months of age.

The same person must do the training and the follow-ups - do not switch over.

Learn to read your baby for signs of being tired and if tired put him down immediately.

Learn to read your baby and interpret variations of crying (sad, tired, angry, ill, hurt, etc.).

Put him down belly down - makes him feel more secure and cozy.

Put him down drowsy but awake. Let him fall asleep by himself, in his crib in his dark room, as you walk out with love.

Remember that the bed and darkness are his friends, do not walk in and rescue him from what is possibly just your interpretation of a situation.

Remember that your baby should get a minimum of 10 hours of sleep per night.

Routine of naps and bedtime should be as accurate and repetitive as possible.

The more repetitive the ritual the easier the naps and nights.

The darker the room the longer the naps and sleep.

Avoid any sugar buzz before naps or sleeps - no late dinners.

    Have dummy and snugglers ready.

Never turn on the light or talk or interact with him at night.

Remember that a good nap and sleep routine is a must, just like buckling up in a car seat or avoiding candy. There may be crying involved at first, but remember it is not truly sad crying, just agitated crying.

Be 100% committed and stick through it once you have started. Do not stop. If you feel you are being slack, get yourself together.

Every change in routine takes 3-5 days to become a pattern.

  5. Can you sum it all up for me in one sentence?

Can you sum it all up for me in one sentence?

Always be there for your baby.

    Trust your feeling.

    Let go.

Put your baby down drowsy but awake and let him know you are walking out of the room as he confidently dozes off.

The point is that in order to help your baby fall back asleep by himself, you have to be ready to re-create the exact same setting from when he fell asleep.

So if you want to make it easy for your baby and yourself, let him fall asleep with no support, so you don't have to re-create anything.

No breast, no bottle, no dummy, no singing, no rocking, no anything, not even yourself, just love.

  6. Should I take time off work to do the coaching?

Should I take time off work to do the coaching?

Yes. You need a week off, try and get more if you can.

First, you need to catch up on the sleep you didn't get. Then you have to read The Manual, click through the app and if you can, read the eBook as well. You need to watch your baby for a few days to learn about his natural routine, and then come up with a schedule.

Next, do the coaching module by module, and then be on alert over the following week. If you can get only one week off, do the watching and scheduling while you are still at work, then for your one week off, concentrate on the coaching, and the following week try to be with your baby at least for bedtime and through the night until wake up time.

  7. Does the coaching involve crying?

    Does the coaching involve crying?

Sleep Sheriff is based on reading your baby and gently coaching him to have a healthy routine.

A good nap and sleep routine is a must, just like buckling up in a car seat or avoiding candy. There is crying involved but remember it is not sad crying, it is an expression of refusal.

Tell your baby that you understand that he does not want to go to bed and would rather stay up with mom, dad and his older sibling(s), but it is dark and time to go to bed.

Just by the vibe of what you say, your baby understands even though he cannot speak yet. Take him straight into his good night ritual and he will feel ok because he likes the ritual and knows what's about to come next.

The better you read your baby, the less will he cry, and the less chances of sad crying.

As soon as you feel his crying turn from furious into sad, go in and assure him that everything is ok. Pet him, sooth him with "sh sh" sounds, and in case he does not calm down, take him up in your arms and assure him that everything is ok, then gently put him back down into his crib.

  8. Am I a bad mother when I do not nurse my baby to sleep?

Am I a bad mother when I do not nurse my baby to sleep?

The best mother is the one who looks after herself, accepts help, and trusts her baby can sleep without her.

Swollen and inflamed nipples are not necessary components of being a good mother, but they are symptoms of a baby sucking simply for comfort.

There are a lot of hormones traveling in a mother’s body, especially if the birth was problematic or an unwanted C-section was conducted. The whole process of birth, while beautiful, is exhausting on the mother due to these hormones and obvious physical factors.

It is not uncommon for a mother to consider herself not good enough and compare himself with other mothers or have unreal expectations. To compensate for this rollercoaster of emotions, many mothers have the need to totally sacrifice their mental, emotional, and physical health, for their child. While this is an understandable and noble sentiment, it is not always what is best for you or your baby.

Let's get this straight: an exhausted overtired mother is no good for her baby. You need and you deserve a break, and so you must break the cycle. Try to look at the whole situation from an objective point of view and talk to your partner about it. All you need to improve the current situation is to see that you are perfect. You and your baby have the chance to grow according to the cosmic plan, and this advice right here is part of this plan.

Realize that a smart mother accepts help and knows her limits for the sake, health, and well being of her baby. Consider handing the situation over to dad. It may be easier for him during this time, as he has not just gone through the considerably exhausting ordeal of childbirth. Have faith in him, as he is very able to introduce a routine to your baby.

Many fathers may find it easier during this time to have a logical approach to these stressful situations.

A baby with no sleep routine represents a very severe situation for everyone involved: mother, father and baby. Experience shows that if fathers are in charge, it may be easier for them to lead with logic and follow instructions, but be assured that the love remains. This is what is often needed here. As a mother who has just carried her child for the past 9 months, know that you are perfect and deserve a break. Plus let's not forget the fact that fathers do not smell of breast milk.

  10. Is it better to tweak one of the suggested schedules or tailor my individual one for my baby?

Is it better to tweak one of the suggested schedules or tailor my individual one for my baby?

Sleep Sheriff suggests schedules that work for most babies no matter if breast- or formula fed.

It all starts with you taking accurate notes of when your baby does what. Do this over a week, then compare your notes and detect a pattern so you know the sleep habits of your baby.

Look up what schedules are suggested for the age of your baby and see how close they come to the rhythm she has. If you find one that suits you, tweak it to how you feel it would best work for your child. In case none of the suggested schedules seems ok, then create your own by comparing the amount of sleep your baby has with how much is required at that age. In any case you can turn on Sleep Sheriff to coach you and remind you of what you have to do.

His room
  1. Is it okay to have a lot of stuff in the crib?

Is it okay to have a lot of stuff in the crib?

The crib is the place to sleep not to play.

A crib contains a covered mattress (a fabric that prevents babies' arms from becoming tangled in the crib walls), your baby's favorite snuggler, maybe a dummy, a blanket and a pillow. That's it. No pets, no toys, no anything.

You want to find what you need when you walk in. This might be the dummy or the snuggler. You do not want a parrot, a bear or a toy drum getting in the way. The same goes for your baby reaching for the dummy or the snuggler.

  2. Does the room have to be dark?

Does the room have to be dark?

The darker the room the longer and more relaxed the naps and sleep.

Spend time in the dark room until your eyes have adjusted and see if it is really dark.

The purpose of proper blinders or blind out curtains is to completely darken the room into a pitch black with no daylight or any streetlights seeping through. Do not buy any products that allow light to come through, even if it is only a tiny ray of light.

Complete darkness stimulates the production of the hormone melatonin, commonly called the sleep hormone. Without it, the human body has a hard time falling asleep, and even if sleep does happen, it is never deeper than a superficial level where any disturbance turns into a wakeup call.

Remember that only naps in the crib longer than 45 minutes are restorative. Dim lights are gold!!

  3. Does the room have to be completely quiet?

Does the room have to be completely quiet?

Yes especially if you have twins !!!

The less noise in the room the longer and more relaxed the naps and sleep.

The less noise the better (a must for twins especially).

The first step is to apply rubber or sponge on the doorframe so it seals noise off nicely. This also reduces the need for air-conditioning or heating.

If this is not enough, do the same with the door where the noise comes from. If this still lets noise through, cover the inside of the door with sponge and decorate it to your likes.

Last option is to install egg cartons or sponges as seen on music studio walls.

  4. What temperature should I set in the room?

What temperature should I set in the room?

Babies like it colder than you would think.

Babies like to sleep in cold environments of around 18 - 20 degrees Celsius. However, in case there is no air-conditioner, babies find 23 - 26 degrees Celsius to be just fine. Consider humidity, consider colds that might require a warmer room, or a fever which may require a colder room, just use your best judgment.

A great spot to feel your baby's temperature and not wake him up is his neck just below his hair. Wearing a digital watch does help, its light is just enough to light your way to the crib, guide your hand to his neck, and walk out again. It also helps you find the spot for the thermometer or the mouth to give medication.

  5. How do I darken a hotel or guest room?

How do I darken a hotel or guest room?

Always travel with two rolls of aluminum foil and painters' tape.

No matter how dark the receptionist promises your room will be, double check and spend some time in there to allow your eyes to get used to the dark.

Tape off sources of light such as standby indicators or the like. Tape the sides of the curtain to the wall (to avoid damage to the walls, be sure to use painters' tape).

Worst-case scenario, you can wet the windows and apply aluminum foil, being sure to cover the window frames well. The moisture creates a vacuum so the foil stays on. However be careful, if you leave it on for more than 4 days, the aluminum reacts with the water and leaves stains on the windows that may be very hard to clean. You can also use the painters' tape to stick the foil to the frame.

  6. How do I choose a promising hotel or guest room?

How do I choose a promising hotel or guest room?

    Consider lighting, noise, etc.

Choose the appropriate room before you unpack and move in. These are the questions you want to ask yourselves:

Is there a road frequented by noisy vehicles such as trucks or teenagers on bikes?

Are there any neighbors, and if so, are they celebrating anything, and if yes, will it disrupt my baby? Do they seem likely to be agreeable and quiet down?

What time does that bar on the other side of the road close?

Can I tell reception not to call or do i just unplug the phone?

Long story short, if you realize that there are major disturbances, and there is nothing you can do about it, relax and embrace it. It is ok for your baby to go to bed a bit later. Same goes for air travel with a seat close to other babies, high traffic areas (like by the toilets), or for a long overlay in an airport, or the like.

Can no light at all enter the room?

The darker the room the longer the naps and sleep.

Spend some time in the room that you just have blacked out. Blinders are down, black out curtain is closed, door is closed, and there are no more sources of light.

You will soon realize that there are so many ways daylight can enter, so you'll have to get a plan together of how you can totally black out the room, because you need to. Use aluminum foil on the windows until you have a permanent solution. Darkness is key.

What's the best tip on low noise?

Make sure the door opens and closes silently, that there is no noise outside, and you wear no shoes.

The problem with noise is only at the time markers and while he is falling asleep.

This is when every little noise counts because that's when the sleep curve reaches the surface and your baby is prone to waking up. Ok say he woke up and you have to go in, there is nothing more annoying than a squeaking door as you walk out. Sure, your baby has to know that you are leaving the room and that he is falling asleep by himself, still walking out with a “sh sh” is different from a squeaking door.

Different age different needs
  1. Newborn sleep habits and needs?

    Newborn sleep habits and needs?

    Bond with your baby.

Respond to every cry or unrest immediately.

    Learn to read your baby.

Let your baby gently feel the difference between day and night.

There is no rhythm or schedule at newborn age, the only thing that matters is that he learns to differentiate between day and night, so you need to create a dark room for him at night and open the curtains in the morning.

We talk about a newborn until about 3 months of age. In this period, your baby does almost nothing but drink and sleep. Naps and sleeps are between 30-45 minutes, but can be up to 3-4 hours. After 3 weeks of age, most newborns can stay awake a bit longer.

Remember to darken the room at night and let the light in when your baby is awake. This helps him to differentiate between day and night. As soon as he dozes off again, close the curtains so not light gets in.

Upon waking up, always offer the breast or the bottle, as newborn stomachs are small and fill up as quickly as they empty.

Remember that breast milk production works on a supply and demand basis so the more often the baby drinks, the more milk is produced. The smoother the flow, the less likely it is that nursing problems will occur.

Learn to read your baby from day one. Eye rubbing, yawning, staring into space, etc. are all signs that he is getting tired. Be sure to pay careful attention and respond quickly.

When he is restless and fussy, you might have overlooked the signs and now have to deal with an overtired baby that needs to be lulled to sleep. This creates more work for you.

Utilize whichever techniques you think are best to comfort your baby, but at the moment he is actually dozing off, it is crucial to make sure he dozes off alone with no nipple or bottle in his mouth, without petting, soothing or any other support from you or anything else.

He must be able to fall asleep by himself initially, in order to sooth himself into falling back asleep once he inevitably wakes up in the middle of the night or mid-nap.

We suggest your newborn goes to bed at a convenient time that works for your schedule, and that he gets about 10 hours of sleep.

As an example, you may introduce a fixed bedtime around 20:00, with night feeds as needed and a wake up time roughly at 06:00. Gently wake him up and feed him as you go to bed, then straight back to sleep. All night feeding is with no or super minimum light, then straight back to sleep. A digital watch gives just enough light.

We do not give any schedule for the day, because every newborn is different and should be treated individually, so it is unnecessary to follow a standard routine. What matters most in the first 3 months of age is that you and your baby develop a relationship that is based on understanding and anticipating his needs, while at the same time making sure that he learns to fall asleep by himself without any support from you.

Never let him cry, always offer him the breast, remember that his stomach is so small.

For feeding, we suggest that he nurses right after waking up, before the naps, and twice before the good night sleep. Go with your feelings and his needs and feed him however often he needs and wants to drink.

  2. Needs at 11 months?

    Needs at 11 months?

    Read your baby.

Let your baby fall asleep by himself.

Be alert and mind the time markers.

Work on cutting out the night feed.

Most 11-month-old babies have begun sleeping through the night. If yours still wakes up to eat, it's ok as long as he goes straight back to sleep and dozes off by himself with no nipple, bottle, rocking or petting.

However, if he does wake to eat, be sure to keep the room quiet and dark.

If your baby wakes up more than twice, he most likely did not fall asleep by himself, but was initially soothed to sleep by you and/or an external source. The external source in most cases would be the nipple, bottle, rocking, or snuggled up on your lap where you then transferred him to his bed. If this is the case, remember to let him fall asleep by himself in his crib as soon as you recognize his cues and realize he is dozing off.

For feeding, we suggest that he nurses right after waking up, before the naps, and twice before the good night sleep. Go with your feelings and his needs and feed him however often he needs and wants to drink.

If you already add solids to breast milk or formula, let him try finger food before you nurse him. Remember that eating takes time and babies are messy. You may need to give him a good wash before he goes down again. Be sure to start eating early enough that you avoid stress and rushing before his next nap.

If it happens that you are running late for the goodnight ritual, it is okay to shorten it on a rare occasion, but it is essential that you never skip it entirely.

  3. Needs at 12 months and toddler age?

Needs at 12 months and toddler age?

    Read your baby.

Let your baby fall asleep by himself.

Be alert and mind the time markers.

Most toddlers sleep through the night.

In most cases, breast milk or formula has been replaced with solids. This means no more feeding at night.

The term toddler describes young children from one to three years of age. Obviously sleep needs vary a great deal, so these schedules are only rough suggestions.

We strongly advise you to keep the noon nap for as long as you possibly can, well into playgroup and kindergarten. In case there are no sleep facilities at your child's kindergarten, consider collecting your little one early to get him home for his noon nap.

Keep in mind that he might fall asleep in the car and you have to transfer him to his crib once you get home. It is okay to let him sleep in the car seat on occasion.

You worked so hard on your schedules since he was 4 months of age and this noon nap is your benefit. You can reduce it gradually, but try to not lose it.

1-year-old toddler sleep schedule: approx. 13 hours of total sleep, 2 naps

1.5-year-old toddler schedule: approx. 13 hours of total sleep, 1 nap

2-year-old toddler schedule: approx. 12.5 hours of total sleep, 1 nap

3-year-old toddler schedule: approx. 12 hours of total sleep, 1 nap

Turn the schedule into a routine.

    Bond with your baby.

Respond to every cry or unrest immediately.

    Learn to read your baby.

Introduce fixed wake up and go to bed times.

At around three months of age, babies tend to lose their natural rhythm of dozing off for healthy naps. This is why we suggest introducing a soft routine that allows +/- 30 minutes around each event. Most babies at this age are still nursed or bottle-fed. Formula lasts much longer than breast milk.

Sleep Sheriff suggests two different schedules. What both schedules have in common is the 07:00 wake up and 20:00 good night. Those times have proven to work well and pave the way for all changes you will undergo as your baby grows.

For feeding, we suggest that he nurses right after waking up, before the naps, and twice before the good night sleep. Go with your feelings and his needs and feed him however often he needs and wants to drink.

  6. Needs at 4 months?

    Needs at 4 months?

You are not alone. Sleep Sheriff has all you need.

    Read your baby.

Let your baby fall asleep by himself.

Be alert and mind the time markers.

Most babies sleep well at night and take their healthy restorative naps during the early months, but if your baby suddenly seems to throw his natural sleep routine overboard by the age of 4 months, you are not alone. In fact, the majority of parents turn to Sleep Sheriff at this point in time.

Now is when your baby develops sleep rhythms. After dozing off he sinks in deep, but then comes back to the surface and is prone to being woken up by a loud sound or something similar, and then sinks in deep again.

The critical time markers where you should be alert and ready to pet and "sh sh" him are:

    5 minutes be ready
    15-20 minutes be alert
    45 minutes be ready
    1.5 hours be alert

Now is the time to read The Manual, introduce a sleep routine, and follow the schedule as accurately as you can. Make sure your baby falls asleep without any support, like the nipple, the bottle, or even while laying on you. Now is the time to react. Now is the time to make this happen.

Your baby still cannot roll over, let alone stand up, so you can easily soothe him with a gentle pet and a "sh sh". But of course at the moment of dozing, be sure he falls asleep by himself, without being soothed by you.

Your baby's sleep will not go back to normal or what it used to be over the first three months; that's a fact. So observe his rhythm and tweak one of the suggested schedules for your baby.

Most 4-month-old babies wake up 1-3 times during the night to eat, and then go straight back to sleep. Be sure to keep the room quiet and dark while feeding in the middle of the night.

If your baby wakes up more than that, he most likely did not fall asleep by himself, but was initially soothed to sleep by you and/or an external source. The external source in most cases would be the nipple, bottle, rocking, or snuggled up on your lap where you then transferred him to his bed. If this is the case, remember to let him fall asleep by himself in his crib as soon as you recognize his cues and realize he is dozing off.

You will likely find yourself awake by 04:00 because this is when he sleeps the lightest and so your baby is right below the surface.

This is not only new to you but also to your baby. This is why a dark room that lets little noise in is so crucial. You'll find it very hard if not impossible to get your baby back to sleep when he has already woken up, because he thinks it is day and time to play.

The trick is to observe what time he typically wakes up and the set your alarm clock 5 minutes earlier, so you have time to silently walk into his room and be ready to pet and “sh sh” him at his first little sound or movement. You do not want him to wake up. If you need the dummy, then so be it.

For feeding, we suggest that he nurses right after waking up, before the naps, and twice before the good night sleep. Go with your feelings and his needs and feed him however often he needs and wants to drink.

  12. Needs at 10 months?

    Needs at 10 months?

    Read your baby.

Let your baby fall asleep by himself.

Be alert and mind the time markers.

Work on cutting out the night feed.

Most 10-month-old babies have begun sleeping through the night.

Sleep Associations
  1. What are sleep associations?

    What are sleep associations?

Sleep associations are sleep supports your baby associates falling asleep and without which he can hardly fall asleep.

You do not want to create any sleep associations because when he wakes up, you have to recreate them to help him fall back asleep. The best examples are: nipple, bottle, rocking, dummy, song, and so forth.

The point is that in order to help your baby fall back asleep on his own, you have to be ready to re-create the exact same setting from when he originally fell asleep.

If you want to make it easy for your baby and yourself, let him fall asleep with no support, so you don't have to re-create anything

  2. My baby fell asleep in the stroller - what now?

My baby fell asleep in the stroller - what now?

Mind the time markers and just do it.

A nap is only considered restorative if it lasts for a minimum of 45 minutes, and it should be in his crib.

When you walk your baby to sleep, be clear about how long you want him to sleep and if you can make it home or if it is going to be a stroller nap. If it will be a stroller nap, that’s no problem.

You might want to get your baby used to a fixed routine, or you are prefer walking with your baby in fresh air rather than rushing home and putting him down in his crib.

Remember, first it is about you. If your baby just happened to fall asleep in the stroller but you want him to sleep in his crib because you know that it is only there that he will nap his full 1.5 hours, then you'll have to move him out of the stroller and into his crib. No need to let him know, just mind the time markers and keep him asleep as you move him. A little petting and “sh sh”, maybe the dummy, then he dozes off all by himself.

  3. My baby fell asleep on my breast - what now?

My baby fell asleep on my breast - what now?

Let him wake up gently to realize he dozes off by himself with no nipple in his mouth.

You might enjoy this one on one time with him, but the reality is that soon you will be sleep deprived and forced to get up at night just to have some more of this one on one time. Night after night, sore nipples and no sleep.

The breast is the most natural soother for a baby. Make sure you understand the difference between drinking and sucking for comfort. What you do not want is a baby that sucks himself into sleep on your nipple, because you may develop a nipple rash or worse sooner or later, and your baby develops a habit that you do not want him to develop.

Learn how to take the nipple out of his mouth before he dozes off. Yes he will cry, but you'll be able to soothe him with your words, a song, a “sh sh” sound, or you might even be quick enough to replace the nipple with a dummy. You might have to replace the breast with a bottle and then switch over to the dummy. Just make sure you fill the bottle less and less day by day.

What you have done now is replace one sleep support with another, however the substitute is way easier to eventually get rid of. What you want is that if your baby wakes up he finds himself in the exact same environment as when he fell asleep.

My baby fell asleep in my bed - what now?

Tell him it is ok to fall asleep in your bed and that you will transfer him to his crib later.

Your baby can already fall asleep with no breast or bottle, but still dozes off in your arms in your bed.

You are just a tiny step from freedom and a happy baby. As you have taken the nipple or bottle out of his mouth, just take him to his crib while he is in this short moment of still being half awake, put him down, give him the dummy, a bit of petting, “sh sh”, and off he dozes by himself. If it is ok for you that he falls asleep in your bed and you carry him over to his crib later on, just tell him so.

The combination of a pitch black room, just with a bit of warm light and a melody from the babyphone has a very soothing effect, is a good transition from day to night and triggers the want and need for sleep.

Make sure you turn on the melody just before putting him down so he understands that soon he will be in his crib and eventually is looking forward to fall asleep.

Now here comes the tricky part: turn off the melody as he dozes off and is just about to fall asleep. What you want is that if your baby wakes up he finds himself in the exact same environment as when he fell asleep. So be alert at the time markers. You might find out that keeping the melody turned on has no effect on his sleep, so keep it on.

  7. My baby fell asleep listening to me singing - what now?

My baby fell asleep listening to me singing - what now?

Read your baby and walk off fading out the song.

Just as the melody from the babyphone, a song is a great calmer. Turn it into an indicator for going to bed or to nap, sing it, and let it fade out before he dozes off. Invent a melodic one liner, sing it and walk out the door. "I love you now good night" for example works great, whereas "I love you now sleep well" has this "s" that some babies might find disturbing. In any case, walk out the door singing as he dozes off and is just about to fall asleep.

Remember to use different songs for naps and night sleeps and that the fading of the song as you walk out is key to letting him know that you will no longer be in his room in case he wakes up. So there is no surprise for him.

  8. My baby fell asleep sucking the dummy - what now?

My baby fell asleep sucking the dummy - what now?

Make sure you have more than one dummy ready, some in the crib, preferably fluorescent.

To avoid misunderstandings, note that in many households in the US a dummy is referred to as pacifier.

For a fact, a dummy has a very calming effect both while falling asleep, and asleep. Decide yourself if you want to keep it or not. If you want to take it away, it will take some time. Just as with the breast or bottle, you'll have to take the dummy out of his mouth just as he dozes off. Again, it is your aim that your baby wakes up and finds himself in the exact same environment as when he fell asleep.

The dummy can be a tricky one, you baby might refuse to let it go, cry, and suck really hard on it to keep it. Still, be consistent and take it out as your baby dozes off. If he cries, give it back to him. Repeat it until he falls asleep with no dummy. If you have managed to do it once, the following times will not be as hard.

If it is ok for you to get up at night just to find the dummy and put it back in his mouth, here are some suggestions to make your life easier:

    1. Buy a fluorescent dummy. Best invention ever. You and your baby see it shine at night, find it, grab it, and into the mouth.

    2. Wear a digital watch so you can turn on the light as you walk in your baby's room. You will not hit your head, knees or toes on objects you did not think were there, you'll easily find your baby's mouth, and you can also see your way back out of his room.

  9. My baby fell asleep with petting - what now?

My baby fell asleep with petting - what now?

Read your baby and switch from petting to sh sh as she dozes off.

This bit of patting and “sh sh” makes your life so much easier.

As soon as your baby wakes up, this is what he is waiting for (maybe the dummy too) and off he dozes again into the deep sleep he deserves, and you deserve too. Just make sure that your baby learns that this petting and “sh sh” is a help to calm him, not to fall asleep with, so do not let the petting turn into a sleep association.

Here is how you do it: Look at your open hand and then close the palm with your fingers. Do not make a fist; just lay your fingers on your palm. This is how you gently tap the butt of your baby to resemble the rocking movement of the stroller. Of course this only works if you have turned your baby on his belly. A rhythm of three taps and one break has proven to work well, but your baby might like another rhythm. You'll find out. Accompany your petting with a little “sh sh shhhh” or only a long shhhh. Again, you'll find out what he likes. The more tired he gets, the gentler and less you tap him, and the more you pet and sh sh him. Your aim is to stop petting before he dozes off and let him fall asleep all by himself as you walk out. Again, what you want is that if your baby wakes up he finds himself in the exact same environment as when he fell asleep.

  10. My baby fell asleep with the lights on - what now?

My baby fell asleep with the lights on - what now?

    Just mind the time markers.

Your baby might want you to leave the door open or keep the light dimmed, rather than falling asleep in a completely dark room.

If this is okay with you, keep in mind that you still want to avoid direct light from outside. This also goes for when you walk in his room to check on him or put the dummy back in.

Remember we have doors for a reason: apart from keeping the temperature constant in the room, a shut door keeps all noise and light from outside. Think of having guests or a bit of a later noisier night. The procedure is simple, just shut the door as you walk out, and let your baby fall asleep all by himself in his dark room. If your baby for some reason strongly refuses, get a night-light that you can only see shine when your eyes have gotten used to the darkness. Anything brighter is too much.

  17. Does my baby have to fall asleep by himself?

Does my baby have to fall asleep by himself?

Only if your baby falls asleep by himself will he fall back asleep by himself in case he wakes up.

What a blessing when your baby dozes off while in your arms, in the stroller, on the bottle or still half on the breast. That little miracle is asleep, now all you have to do is transfer him over to his crib and it's done.

Well, what seems to be a blessing for now is soon going to turn into sleepless nights and days with no routine.

We do not discuss co-sleeping here, we are helping babies to fall sleep and sleep through the night. Your baby has to learn how to fall asleep all by himself, otherwise he will always need to fall asleep on you, in order to sleep at all.

The point is that in order to help your baby fall back asleep by himself, you have to be ready to re-create the exact same setting from when he fell asleep. If you want to make it easy for your baby and yourself, let him fall asleep with no support, so you don't have to re-create anything. No breast, no bottle, no dummy, no singing, no rocking, no anything at all. Just love.

My baby fell asleep in the car - what now?

Tell him it is ok to fall asleep in the car and that you will transfer him later to his crib.

Before your baby even falls asleep in the car, tell him that it is ok for him to fall asleep in the car and that later on you will bring him from the car to his crib.

As you take your baby out of the car seat, be gentle and keep him asleep as long as possible. Make sure you have the automatic door lights turned off, keep the engine running, keep the radio on, try to keep it all as it was when your baby fell asleep.

As you enter the house, it is ok for your baby to wake up just enough to realize he is out of the car and inside the house, his house, and his crib; his safe environment. As you get him ready for bed, you might take clothes off or put others on, you might need to change his diaper, you know it.

Whatever you do, make sure it does not disrupt his sleep. Let it all be just enough to make your baby come to the surface of his sleep, maybe with a bit of a twinkle or slightly open eyes, then tell him you are moving him to his crib and everything is fine. A little petting and “sh sh”, maybe the dummy, and off he dozes all by himself.

The Ritual
  1. What is a ritual?

    What is a ritual?

A ritual is repetitive and something to look forward to (something else).

There are many definitions of a ritual.

For the topic of interest here, a ritual is something recurring that lets your baby know what is coming next, and that he should look forward to it.

Some examples include getting dressed for a ride in the stroller, putting the tissue on before sitting down to eat, or any of the suggestions listed below that will help your baby look forward to falling asleep.

  3. What’s the end of the ritual?

What’s the end of the ritual?

    You let him fall asleep.

It should turn into an automated move: Lay him down on the back on the sleeping bag, close the zipper, turn him on his belly, give him his snuggler to hold, maybe hand him the dummy, pet him a bit with some sh sh, then walk out singing and fading your one liner to let him know you will no longer be in his room in case he wakes up. So he is not surprised.

  4. Does the ritual have to be the same every evening?

Does the ritual have to be the same every evening?

The more fun and repetitive the ritual is, the easier the naps and nights will be.

Find something that your baby likes, that makes him smile and laugh. This is what you center your ritual around.

Make sure it is calming, and that you have done all you need to do before you begin (diapers, pajamas, babyphone, react to brothers and sisters, etc.).

Little things can become a ritual. For example, dimming the light together and saying bye-bye to the lamp; a ritual can also be reading a book, or even a whole bath time blow dry cuddle action. Decide on your ritual, but make sure it is something you will not mind doing every day because you cannot change it once you start.

  5. A story as a ritual?

    A story as a ritual?

If you feel like telling stories, tell them!

There is nothing like listening to a storyteller. And there is nothing like telling a story.

This is a great ritual for all ages: baby, toddler, and beyond. They will understand or at least get the vibe, the melody of the voice, and they will be taken to a different place. Fade out the story and invent an ending when you realize your baby gets tired eyes, then put him straight into his crib. Do not let this moment pass. A little bit of petting and "sh sh", and you're out the door.

  6. A bath as a ritual?

    A bath as a ritual?

Keep in mind that a bath takes time and often agitates toddlers.

The warmer the water, the more calming the experience, but usually a bath activates the baby.

Remember this fact when you schedule a bath. At the same time, in case your baby gets tired way before it is time to sleep or nap, a cool bath or shower does the job and he's likely to stay awake until nap or bedtime.

  7. The bottle as a ritual?

    The bottle as a ritual?

Mind the sugar buzz and take the bottle away before your baby dozes off.

There's nothing wrong with a bottle, just make sure it does not contain sugar in any form.

To turn the good night bottle into a ritual, let your baby help you make it, or at least involve him in the process. Then enter the room with dimmed light and always sit down in the same way and at the same spot. When you realize your baby getting tired and almost dozing off, be quick and gently put him in his crib. Do not let this moment pass. A little bit of petting and “sh sh” and out the door.

  8. Changing into pj’s as a ritual?

Changing into pj’s as a ritual?

    Buy fun pyjamas.

The last change of clothes before going to bed for a good night's sleep is into the pajamas.

Make sure the pajamas looks and feel different from other clothes. Get one with the integrated socks, as this is something at least toddlers do not wear at daytime.

Turn the pj’s into a ritual, every evening at the same place at the same time and then straight in the room.

  9. The sleeping bag as a ritual?

The sleeping bag as a ritual?

Buy a fun sleeping bag with a smart zip.

A sleeping bag is a very effective tool to indicate the good night's sleep.

Do not use the sleeping bag for naps; make sure this is special for the night. Your baby will understand that pj’s means long sleep and no sleeping bag means nap.

In case you use one, have the dummy ready, as often putting on the sleeping bag and the dummy in is the combination to instant doze off.

  10. Singing as a ritual?

    Singing as a ritual?

If you feel like singing, sing!

Just as the melody from the babyphone, a song is a great calmer.

Turn it into an indicator for going to bed or to nap, sing it, and let it fade out before she dozes off.

Invent a melodic one liner, sing it and walk out the door. "I love you now good night" for example works great, whereas "I love you now sleep well" has this "s" that some babies might find disturbing.

In any case, walk out the door singing as she dozes off and is just about to fall asleep. Remember to use different songs for naps and night sleeps and that the fading of the song as you walk out is key to letting her know that you will no longer be in her room in case she wakes up. So there is no surprise for him.

  11. Reading a book as a ritual?

Reading a book as a ritual?

Make sure you end the story with someone going to sleep.

Install bookshelves at the height of your baby's reach in his room. She'll walk over and bring you the book(s) he wants to read with you. Again, get your baby involved in the process; make him part of the routine.

The selection of books should be very small, and you can keep the same books in there for a long time.

A ritual works best the most ordinary it is and the less it changes, so the same couple of short books before going to bed is the choice. Choose books that end with going to bed, this is so helpful. As you close the book, tell your baby that the book also goes to bed now and say good night together.

The Routine
  1. What is a routine?

    What is a routine?

A routine is a schedule with fixed periods and times for eating, naps, and sleep.

A routine makes your baby feel safe and puts yourself in control.

Observe your baby's routine, learn how much sleep your baby needs, compare it with suggested schedules and tweak it to your needs.

Read The Manual for detailed step-by-step explanations on how to coach your baby towards the routine you created.

No matter what you call it, you and your baby need to know what is happening currently and what is going to happen next. You need to plan your day, so you'll have to plan your baby's day.

Think of your own needs, and your baby's needs and wants, and find a balance. Never think of yourself or your partner as being egotistical when trying to practice self-care. You are just trying to fulfill your needs. Once you have made a plan and the schedule is ready, you can turn it into a routine.

A routine is the best thing you can do for your baby and for yourself. It will help you as a person, your relationship with your partner, your patience with your baby and in general, and of course your baby himself. You create the environment for him to learn how to eat, drink and sleep.

The great thing about it is that once you have accustomed your baby to the routine, it no longer matters who helps him to eat, drink, or who puts him to bed for naps or his good night's sleep. It can be you, your partner, the grandparents, or a nanny. As soon as your baby finds himself in the right environment, he will know it is time to sleep and he will look forward to lying down and falling asleep.

A person needs about three to five days to get accustomed to a (new) routine. You'll then have to stick to this (new) routine for at least a week, allowing only minor diversions from the plan when unavoidable. The (new) routine needs to settle in and there must be no trace of the old pattern. This is the same for yourself and your baby. Consider the idea of introducing sports to a lazy lifestyle. Think of switching from a fast food soda pop life, to a (new) healthy diet. It's hard.

The better you understand the mechanisms in yourself when you refuse to change something old for something new, the better you understand why your baby might be upset and angry if all of a sudden he has to go to bed at a certain time, and probably without the song and endless stories you used to sing and read to him.

You take something away from your baby and he cries to let you know that he does not like what you are doing. However, what he likes, but doesn't know it yet, is that with this perfect sleep plan, he has the full power when he is awake and he'll soon be sleeping through the night in peace and happiness. Remember that most crying (if there is any) is not sad, but upset and angry.

  2. Do love and routine go hand in hand?

Do love and routine go hand in hand?

A routine of scheduled food, drinks and enough sleep helps your baby develop in all aspects.

All your baby needs at night is fresh air and love.

Only with enough quality sleep can a baby develop and learn new skills.

Tired babies are restless, winy and constantly prone to accidents when learning new skills.

There is no point doing something you do not believe in. The question to ask is why do I not believe in it? There is a lot of ground to cover here. The underlying misunderstanding is that love and routine do not go hand in hand. In other words, you think if you love your baby, it is not ok to impose a routine on him that he refuses to adopt.

    Common beliefs are:

I do not want to leave my baby alone in his room.
I do not want to force my baby into a routine.
I do not want to condition my baby.
I do not want other parents to see me as a heartless mother or father.
I do not want to let reason overcome love.

Once the situation of sleepless nights and a constantly overtired baby has reached its climax and you are on the edge of going mental, you will no longer care about any of the beliefs you have had, if you ever had them.

  3. Is it ok to leave my baby alone in the crib in the room?

Is it ok to leave my baby alone in the crib in the room?

It is perfectly ok, all your baby needs at night is love and air to breathe.

Your baby does not need you in his sleep.

Your baby needs you to put him to bed, help him learn to fall asleep, and let go, that's all.

You want to realize that your baby sleeps better in his own room without you.

You can go in check on his breath - he breathes.

You can go in listen to his heartbeat - it beats.

You can go in check on his temperature - he is warm.

You can listen to the babyphone or put your ear to the door - there is no sound because your baby is fine and has all he needs at night: love and air to breathe.

Am I forcing my baby into a routine?

You are helping your baby to fall asleep by himself.

You want to understand that you are not forcing anything onto your baby.

You are helping your baby find his natural balance for eating, drinking, and sleeping.

You remind your baby of his internal routine so you and him know what's going on and can fall asleep knowing that everything will be ok when you wake up.

You are responding to your and your baby's needs, so you are fulfilling your responsibility of being a mother, a father or a partner.

  5. Am I conditioning my baby?

    Am I conditioning my baby?

You are helping your baby adopt a healthy routine.

Conditioning is a neutral term. There is nothing good or bad about it, all it explains is how the brain combines an external stimulus (like a certain song or anything else which is part of your ritual) with an internal response in the form of a thought (in our case this is a thought of anything that has to do with sleep, crib, dreams, or the like). Then the body produces melatonin, the hormone that triggers tiredness and sleep, especially when you create a dark setting.

Classic conditioning is if the dog hears the bell he thinks of food and the body produces saliva, regardless if there is food or not.

So in our case, this form of conditioning is a very subtle help to let the baby know what's next so there are no surprises. It is a very useful technique to create stability and security, which your baby craves.

  6. Can introducing a routine seem heartless to others?

Can introducing a routine seem heartless to others?

Everyone will envy you for the sleep you get and the routine you have.

Routine, schedule, sleep training, sleep coaching, sleep conditioning, you name it; somehow there is the belief out there that crying is involved and that the person who imposes a routine to the baby is cruel, heartless and egotistic.

As a matter of fact, there are methods out there that seem cruel, and there are parents who see nothing wrong with those methods. You are a responsible parent and get your head around what's out there, what method resonates with your feelings, and what suits your baby. What's right with some is wrong with others. The subject is highly subjective, there is no right or wrong, what's right is what you feel is right and what's wrong is what you feel is wrong.

All these thoughts flowed into Sleep Sheriff. Again, it comes down to you reading your baby. You want to differentiate between different sorts of crying, and you want to understand what she wants.

Nobody can read your baby like you can, but also you have to learn it. Sleep Sheriff aims at increasing bonding through gradual retreating, which means making your baby know that you are always there for him and that it is perfectly ok for him to fall asleep alone.

  7. Am I letting reason take over love?

Am I letting reason take over love?

Do what you feel; love is always stronger than reason.

There are a number of subjects where reason differs from love.

Generally, reason is seen as the result of the brain, whereas love comes straight from the heart with no reasoning involved.

Decide for yourself if you think helping your baby to sleep is motivated by reason or love. Or both.

  8. Can Papa do it?

    Can Papa do it?

    Papa may do it best.

It is often the case that fathers have a logical approach to severe situations. A baby with no sleep routine represents a very severe situation for everyone involved: mother, father and baby. Experience shows that if fathers are in charge, emotions give way to logical thinking and following instructions, but the love remains. This is what we need here. Plus let's not forget the fact that fathers do not smell of breast milk.

In a more or less "traditional" or "old fashioned" household, mom is busy with nursing and the household chores while dad is away working. This is what it has been in the past and still is in many cases. But just because it has always been like this does not mean that it is meant to be like that.

Papa can take over and do a great job, and mama should rest assured that papa is very capable; it may be a good idea to let him even take over.
Papa appreciates all the advice mama gives him, and mama accepts that papa might have ideas that work just as well. Papa will soon understand that what mama has been doing is harder than his job, and at the same time, papa will realize that he needs a plan to do it all.

With proper planning and time management there is a solution to every problem. This is the kind of brainwork we need here: a structured and loving, disciplined, pro-con thinking individual to ensure the best sleep coaching for the baby. It is up to you to decide who fits this profile, but experience has shown it may be easier for Papa. We are not saying that mothers cannot do it, but it is important to consider Papa as well.

  9. How long does it take for a habit to become a routine?

How long does it take for a habit to become a routine?

It takes roughly three days for a new habit to become a routine, and it takes around three days to change it back to the old routine.

A new habit is something your baby has adopted recently. For example, he never drank a bottle at night but friends were visiting and stayed overnight and gave their baby a bottle before going to bed. Your baby also wanted one, so you gave one to him, and now he wants the bottle every night.

It is up to you to decide if this is an acceptable habit or not. If yes, ok, if not, take this new habit away as soon as you can. You will be facing three days of an upset baby, who is going to bed longing for the bottle, but after those three days, it's over and he will not remember the bottle anymore. If you have friends coming to visit and stay overnight, make sure in case they give their baby a bottle they do it in their room so your baby does not see it.

This and that
  1. What is the best age to start coaching my baby?

What is the best age to start coaching my baby?

Start reading your baby from day one, gradually settle on fixed wake up and bed times, and at four months gently introduce a routine.

The earlier you start, the smoother the transition will be in the problematic four-month period. Train your baby as soon as possible, preferably no later than 4 months. The earlier you introduce fixed wake up and bed times, the easier it will be to settle on nap times with around three months of age. Your baby cannot yet turn over, let alone sit up by himself, so once he is belly down he can settle down easily and you can give him just the right petting. This accounts for stroller as well as crib.

  2. What are time markers?

    What are time markers?

Time markers are ever present no matter where.

You will have internalized the time markers sooner than you would think.

Once the baby has fallen asleep, he sinks in deep and at certain times - we call them time markers - comes back up to the surface and is prone to waking up due to noise or, for example, a toothache.

    These are the time markers:

    5 minutes be ready
    15-20 minutes be alert
    45 minutes be ready
    1.5 hours be alert

If you keep those markers in mind and make sure you are ready to walk in, you will get him to fall back asleep easily just with a bit of petting and “sh sh”.

  3. How much sleep does my baby need?

How much sleep does my baby need?

A happy healthy baby with good learning on all levels definitely has enough sleep.

Every baby is different, so there is nothing wrong realizing that your baby needs more or less sleep than you initially thought, read or were told.

Here are rough estimates of how many hours of sleep per day per age. This can all vary +/- up to one hour:

    Newborn: individual
    3 - 6 months: approx. 15 hours
    7 - 12 months: approx. 14 hours
    2 years: approx. 13 hours
    3 - 4 years: approx. 12 hours
    5 - 11 years: approx. 11 hours

If you see your baby is tired before his scheduled nap or sleep time, put him down immediately. Signs include: yawning, rubbing eyes, rubbing ears, red eyes, and restlessness. Remember that a one timer --a nap that differs from the normal schedule-- does not typically have a lasting effect, as long as it does not happen too frequently. It is encouraged that you try to help him through it so he wakes up at the scheduled wake up time.

If you realize that your baby is always tired before the scheduled nap and sleep times, put him down when he is tired. Be attentive of the time markers and make sure he sleeps until the scheduled wake up time. Then count how much extra sleep this was per day and see if you and he are happy with the new schedule. If yes, that’s great! If no, reassess the schedule.

In case you realize that longer naps result in later bedtime, better shorten the naps (as planned) and make sure he goes to bed according to schedule. Just push him through until it is time to nap, he'll have adopted the schedule in three days.

  4. How do I choose a good stroll location?

How do I choose a good stroll location?

We recommend a rough shaded walkway with no dog walkers or playgrounds in sight.

Unless you are on an active stroll with your baby to soak up nature in the sun, make sure you take care of noise, light and temperature to ease your baby into his nap. Best is a shaded gravel walkway to rock your baby enough, a blanket to keep the baby from sunlight, and good temperature.

For noise reasons, avoid other parents with babies and toddlers, playgrounds, construction sites, busy roads, and the like. Make sure you realize noise hazards in advance so that you don't even get too close especially as a time marker comes up.

As soon as your baby starts waking up, rock the stroller actively so he falls back asleep. A “sh sh” never hurts and don't forget to make sure he has the dummy in his mouth, if he had one when he fell asleep. The point is that in order to help your baby fall back asleep by himself, you have to be ready to re-create the exact same setting from when he fell asleep.

If you don’t want him to wake up, just look for the perfect stroll location and keep in mind the time markers:

    5 minutes be ready
    15-20 minutes be alert
    45 minutes be ready
    1.5 hours be alert

  5. Any tips on good pajamas?

    Any tips on good pajamas?

Pajamas must be fun and have no rubber soles.

Always remember to dress your baby according to what you want to do with him or you want him to do.

Naturally, if he crawls or starts to walk, pants with rubber kneepads or rubber soles on socks are a great idea to facilitate progress and help avoid accidents. However, never let your baby wear them if you want him to sleep. The traction the rubber generates makes him want to stand up, whereas no traction does not even make your baby think of standing up. This accounts for crib and stroller.

  6. Can you tell me more about this sugar buzz?

Can you tell me more about this sugar buzz?

You can set your watch and rest assured: 15 minutes after the cake every birthday party turns wild.

Do not underestimate what harm sugar can do to the sleep of your baby. We are talking about any kind of sugar here: industrial, cane, palm, milk, you name it. Always read the list of ingredients on any product you feed your baby.

Usually, the sugar kicks in after 15 minutes. Babies get agitated, lively, they want to do things, and they do not want to lie down, but instead run and climb.

If you give sugar to your tired baby, he might even get cranky, because he is tired but the sugar does not let him calm down and fall asleep. This is why you should time the last meal or drink at least 30 minutes before bed or naptime.

Is it ok to have my ill or teething baby in my bed?

Do what your heart tells you.

Parents often think that babies sleep better with them, in fact it is quite contrary, babies, just like us, do not like to be disturbed in their sleep. Sure, if your baby is ill and wakes up next to you, it is easy for you to soothe him, pet him, and give him all the love he needs.

When he is fine again he'll be back on his routine in his room instantly.

  8. I am still nursing, can we follow The Manual?

I am still nursing, can we follow The Manual?

Sure, just watch out that your baby does not just suck for comfort to fall asleep.

As long as you nurse with no light and no noise and your baby falls back asleep by himself, nursing at night is okay.

Make sure you understand the difference between drinking and sucking for comfort. Nipple rash or a possible mastitis is the last thing you need.

Most mothers reduce night feeding by 6 months and stop by 8. They wean when the baby is around one year of age.

  9. How can I imagine sleep curves?

How can I imagine sleep curves?

Imagine sleep as a curve, which from time to time hits the surface, that's when your baby might wake up.

The first 6 hours, except for the time markers, we consider deep sleep, whereas sleep in the remaining hours until wake up time gets fairy superficial.

That's why babies are much more prone to waking up after midnight towards the morning. The last two hours before wake up time, which is often the last two dark hours of the night, babies find it very hard to fall back asleep.

Especially in the beginning of a new routine, try and detect a pattern and be wake and alert before your baby wakes up.

  10. Why is it that sleep problems start with 4 months?

Why is it that sleep problems start with 4 months?

We call this the 4-month turning point; every baby has it, you are not alone.

At four months of age the baby develops sleep curves, but as a newborn his sleep was monotonously deep. This is why for the first time, the baby hears sounds, perceives light, realizes when he is transferred from the car seat to his crib, and so forth.

Until four months of age, the baby hardly ever woke up, and so he never had to learn how to fall asleep by himself. Now it is time to teach him.

  11. What are the most crucial points of a sleep schedule?

What are the most crucial points of a sleep schedule?

Wake up and bedtime are important and scheduled, fixed noon naptime comes later on, morning and afternoon naps as needed.

Start with fixed wake up and bedtimes as early as you can.

Use the natural day and night rhythm, and if this does not play in your favor, make sure you have blinders or black out curtains that let no light in.

If your baby wakes up before it is time to wake up in the morning, keep him in the dark room until it's wakeup time. You can calm and cuddle him; eventually his body will adopt the rhythm.

For bedtime, make sure you have organized everything that you need to in time so that bedtime is relaxed with no rush. Having said all that, make sure that you decide on a schedule that suits your needs and your baby's needs.

  12. Where should my newborn sleep?

    Where should my newborn sleep?

Keep your baby with you for the first three months, and then see if he sleeps calmer in his crib.

There is no rule on this topic of course, and we are not going into detail here for how long co-sleeping has benefits.

We feel that a newborn belongs to the mother at least for the first three months.

Anticipating the 4-month sleep problems, it is a good idea to have him sleep in his crib next to your bed so you are ready at all times.

After nursing you'll have to put your baby back in his crib, and this is the start for your coaching: put him back drowsy but awake, then let him doze off by himself.

  13. What is a sleep association?

    What is a sleep association?

Sleep association means that your baby associates a sleep support with falling asleep and cannot fall asleep without this support.

If the sleep association is a blanket, it's easy for him to find after he has woken up, so he can comfortable fall back asleep by himself. However, if your baby associates the nipple with falling asleep, you have a problem. Other sleep associations include a dummy, a song, rocking, petting, and so on. Remember that any support you give is great as long as you stop it once your baby gets drowsy and then let him fall asleep alone as you walk out of the room.

  14. Is it ok to rock my baby?

Is it ok to rock my baby?

Rock him, pet him, and soothe him. It’s all okay; just let him fall asleep by himself.

The most important thing is that your baby feels safe and loved, and rocking is a great way to give him what he needs. Again, it is the same here as with nursing, the dummy, a song, or anything else that we call a sleep support, which can turn into a sleep association in no time. So be alert and rock him for soothing but then put him to bed drowsy and while he is still awake.

What do I do when my baby is awake a lot at night?

Your baby needs a routine and you to coach him.

Except for when your baby is ill or teething, there is no reason for him to be awake a lot at night.

We are awake at daytime and we sleep during the nighttime; this is what you have to explain to your baby. She will understand. Give him examples like grandma is asleep, grandpa is asleep, everyone sleeps at night, it is dark outside, the stars and the moon are out. Go to the window and take a look at the night sky with all it has. Then put him back to bed, no problem, use a support that you can always get rid of later.

  16. How can I learn to understand when my baby gets tired?

How can I learn to understand when my baby gets tired?

Nobody can read your baby like you can, but also you have to learn it.

The most common signs of tired babies are:

    Eye rubbing
    Ear rubbing
    Yawning
    Space staring
    Restlessness
Wants something but cannot determine what it is
    Increasingly whiny
    Crying

This is just a list of some of the signs. However, every baby is different and yours might have his own signs. What counts is that your baby lets you know if he is tired or getting tired. All you need to do is watch him carefully, remember those signs, and learn to interpret them.

  17. How can I learn to understand different types of crying?

How can I learn to understand different types of crying?

The better you read your baby and anticipate his needs, the less crying and the more family harmony.

    Notice the emotions.

A routine helps you understand crying for food, drink or sleep and differentiate those cries, from upset/frustrated cries, or cries of sadness. You will hear a lot of upset crying because your baby refuses to give up old habits and lets you know that he is upset. However, you will soon experience that an old habit is dropped in a day or two and a new habit is adopted in three to five days, so this upset crying does not last long.

The cry out of sadness is the one you want to understand at all times, and you never want your baby to be sad. As soon as you hear a sad cry, make sure you are immediately with your baby and make him understand that you are always there for him, that you love him, and that it is ok for him to be in his room and fall asleep alone. Always remember that it is not enough just to teach your baby how to eat and drink. Your baby needs to learn how to sleep, and you are the one responsible.

How can I get into a mind space that leaves no doubt?

A happy healthy baby is what you want and you are doing the right thing.

Babies that sleep through the night from day one are out there.

But there are not many and they are definitely the exception to the rule. By the age of four months, most babies lose their natural ability to fall asleep and sleep as much as they need to sleep, and this is when it all starts.

This is the point in time when you can choose between an easy life or at the very least, one year of sleepless nights and consecutive years of endless storytelling, coddling, and singing to get your baby back to sleep. Not to mention the never-ending middle of the night sleep interruptions. It’s up to you.

Sleep Sheriff suggests schedules that work for most babies.

We have more than one choice of schedule per child age, which allows you to compare and find out what works best for your baby. Tweak and fine-tune the schedule to suit you, and set your Sleep Sheriff to remind you of what's to come, how you need to prepare, and ultimately, coach you and your baby to harmony.

  20. Is the perfect room really such a big deal?

Is the perfect room really such a big deal?

The darker and the more quiet the room, the better and longer the sleep, that's a fact.

There is a direct correlation between a dark room and quality as well as length of sleep.

The reason behind it is the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for getting tired, falling asleep and sleeping deeply. If the sleep is good, noise does not matter as much, because the baby is deep in his sleep, and the baby does not even get as close to the surface at the time markers. For falling asleep, a quiet room is so much better because every noise is a distraction from falling asleep.

  21. Should I take a week off work to do the coaching?

Should I take a week off work to do the coaching?

Yes. You need a week off, try and get more if you can.

First, you need to catch up on the sleep you didn't get. Then you have to read The Manual, click through the app and if you can, read the eBook as well. You need to watch your baby for a few days to find out about his routine, and then come up with a schedule.

Next, do the coaching for a week, and then be on alert over the following week. So if you can get only one week off, do the watching and scheduling while you are still at work, then for your one week off, concentrate on the coaching, and the following week try to be with your baby at least for bedtime and through the night until wake up time.

  22. Is total darkness really so important?

Is total darkness really so important?

As long as it's dark it's ok, but the darker the better.

Your baby might even be attracted to that light of the air condition. No matter how you distract him, he will again point his finger to that light instead of closing his eyes. Duct tape is the solution. Aluminum foil and regular tape also does the job. Most other lights are standby lights of electric devices that no one needs at night.

There is a direct correlation between a dark room and quality as well as length of sleep. The reason behind it is the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for getting tired, falling asleep and sleeping deeply. If the sleep is good due to a very dark room, noise does not matter as much, because the baby is deep in his sleep, and the baby does not even get as close to the surface at the time markers.

  23. How much sleep does my newborn need?

How much sleep does my newborn need?

Your newborn will sleep so much that you may sometimes go check if he is still breathing.

Basically, all that newborns do is sleep and drink.

They might open their eyes from time to time but that is it. We do not give any suggestions here how much sleep a newborn needs. We do not give a schedule; all we say is make sure your newborn understands the difference between day and night, so open the curtains and let some light in.

When you feel he is ready, start and introduce fixed wake up and go to bed times. That's a great way to introduce the first form of a routine.

  24. What do I need to prepare for the night?

What do I need to prepare for the night?

You know your baby best, so you know what he needs at night and you can find it in darkness.

First of all, you have to get your bearings in total darkness. Second, you have to be able to do it all in total darkness. Find the stuff and use or apply it. In other words, walk in, don't hit your head or toes, find the diaper and wet wipes, know the positions of the buttons of the pj’s, and do it. Use your digital watch and you'll have all the light you need, as long as your eyes are accustomed to darkness.

  25. Any idea how I can solve my dummy problem?

Any idea how I can solve my dummy problem?

Option 1: lose it and do not search.

Option 2: buy many, all fluorescent.

To avoid misunderstandings, note that in many households in the US a dummy is referred to as pacifier.

A dummy is a full on sleep association, and as long as your baby sucks on one, he'll lose it and you'll have to get up at night to find it and give it back to him. Remember, it's about waking up in the same setting like falling asleep before. At the same time, a dummy is such a great soother and it helps readjusting skull bones especially after birth.

So decide for yourself if you want your baby to keep it or not. If not, pull it out of his mouth as he dozes off, so he falls asleep without. In case he complains, let him whine, but if he gets furious, give it back to him. Wait until he is about to doze off and pull it out again. Repeat that until you have it and he sleeps. If you opt for letting your baby suck on the dummy, make sure you have a stash and spread at least four in the corners of the crib, so chances are higher you find the next best one to help him fall asleep again.

The snuggler is dirty and my baby doesn’t want me to wash it, what can I do?

Option 1: lose it and do not search.

    Option 2: buy many.

Anything can be a snuggler: a piece of fabric, a mini blanket, a rabbit, a bear, you name it. Babies love their snuggler and they take it everywhere, anytime. They love its smell. They watch over their snuggler and defend and protect it when they realize you are about to wash it. All you need to do is buy a couple more, so you can always lose one and wash the other while he snuggles with the third.

  27. My baby has a heavy cough and stuffy nose, what do I do?

My baby has a heavy cough and stuffy nose, what do I do?

Lift the head end of his mattress, use a sucker on his nose, choose cough syrup, and consider giving homeopathic remedies.

This is such a common problem, and it remains well into kindergarten. Consult a physician of course if conditions prevail.

Here is what you can do to improve his sleep: lift up his mattress at the head end simply by putting a folded towel under it, 5 cm is enough. Buy a snot sucker, learn how to handle it in darkness, and suck the snot out of his nose.

Choose your cough syrup wisely; give the one that suppresses the need to cough at night, and at daytime give the one that supports coughing up mucus. If you are into homeopathies, note the very first sign of a cold and react with the right remedy.

    Does homeopathy work?

    We say yes.

Some say it's placebo, which would mean that we could heal simply by believing.

Homeopathies work if you react at the first symptom.

Get yourself a good simple “homeopathy for kids” book and buy a basic homeopathy kit, so you are well equipped for most of the acute conditions and at least know what to do over night until you can see a practitioner. Such kits are great to travel and you'll find out that there are only so many remedies that you constantly need. There are people who think homeopathy does not work, so just do your thing.

  29. People say sleeping on the belly is dangerous?

People say sleeping on the belly is dangerous?

Sleeping on the belly makes the baby feel secure and prevents sudden arm movements that usually wake up newborns.

Petting works much better if your baby is belly downwards, the back of the head develops naturally rounded instead of flat, and your baby feels much more secure. In cases of heavy colds with clogged noses, sometimes lying on an inclined mattress helps. If you want to turn your baby over, just go for it, he won't wake up, do not hesitate.

NOTE: According to the American Association of Pediatrics, putting a baby to sleep on the stomach is not recommended as it is believed (although has not been definitively proven) to increase a baby's risk of death due to SIDs (sudden infant death syndrome), which is said to be the leading cause of death among infants under the age of 12 months. Sleep Sheriff suggests belly down as the position of choice. However, once again, we emphasize (as you already confirmed you have understood in the terms and conditions) that this is at your own risk. We recommend you make the choice you feel is best for your and your baby.

  30. How do I tap and pat correctly?

How do I tap and pat correctly?

Tap your baby gently on his butt, just hard enough to resemble a ride in the stroller.

Look at your open hand and then close the palm with your fingers. Do not make a fist; just lay your fingers on your palm. This is how you gently tap the butt of your baby to resemble the rocking movement of the stroller. Of course this only works if you have turned your baby on him belly. A rhythm of three taps and one break has proven to work well, but your baby might like another rhythm. You'll find out.

Accompany your tapping with petting and a little “sh sh shhhh” or only a long shhhh. Again, you'll find out what he likes. The more tired he gets, the gentler and less you tap him and the more you pet him. Your aim is to stop petting before he dozes off and let him fall asleep all by himself as you walk out. Again, what you want is that if your baby wakes up he finds himself in the exact same environment as when he fell asleep.

  31. How do I learn how to walk the stroller in the best way for sleep coaching?

How do I learn how to walk the stroller in the best way for sleep coaching?

Just do it. Choose a rough walkway with shade, and stay far from dogs and playgrounds.

Walking the stroller is great to get out in the open air and be active. If you stroll to help your baby fall asleep, remember that the stroller can turn into a sleep association and that naps are only considered restorative in the crib.

With this in mind, stroll him to introduce a routine or give him some extra sleep when he is ill. Rock the stroller actively in case he is restless, and stop rocking him as he dozes off.

Do I have to change the schedule every month?

Relax and read your baby, then reduce or cut a nap.

Once you have found the schedule that suits your baby, you will find that he sticks to it for at least two months. No need to change anything. Don't worry about other children sleeping more or less; don't worry about other schedules suggesting more or less sleep.

Read your baby and see if he is happy and is learning and engaging appropriately for his age (this means that the schedule is ok). If he is whiny and shows little progress and often hurts himself (this means that he does not get enough sleep).

What do I do when my newborn cries?

Learn to read your baby and anticipate his needs.

Babies cry when they want something, when they don't want something, when they don't understand something, when they are in pain and when they are tired. Sure there are other motivations for crying but those are the top 5.

Try and understand what it is, and see if you can anticipate it for next time. As soon as you have some sort of a schedule you'll find it much easier to interpret different sorts of crying and to anticipate the solution.

  35. What do I need to know about rituals before naps or bedtime?

What do I need to know about rituals before naps or bedtime?

A ritual is something repetitive that makes you look forward to what's about to come.

You, as an adult, plan your days. You know what is scheduled and will be happening and when, at least roughly. You decide on many of your moves as you continuously plan ahead. The more care you take telling or at least in some way letting your baby know what is to come next, the less surprised he will be.

This accounts for end of playtime, getting ready to go out, getting ready to go home, etc. and of course going to bed. Keeping in mind that babies react best with repetitive actions, a ritual is a very effective way of letting them know that soon it is time to go to bed. A common example would be getting into pajamas or reading a book signals good night, it's bedtime.

How can I learn to interpret different sorts of crying?

Learn to read your baby for signs of being tired, hungry and thirsty.

Read your baby. Develop a deep relationship; take time for your baby.

If you have him on a routine, you will soon learn to interpret emotions and sorts of crying because you know what he wants next, whether this is food, breast, a nap or bedtime. Think of when his last poop was and smell him, have some sort of healthy sugar ready for sudden breakdowns, have medication handy if necessary, lift the mattress in case of a cold, and so on.

Always remember that avoiding situations that make your baby cry is way easier than having to deal with a crying baby.

Let him know you are walking out of his room as he dozes off.

Put him down drowsy but awake; let him fall asleep by himself in his crib, in his dark room, as you walk out with love.

Your baby must know that he is alone, and he must be happy, drowsy, cozy, and warm and know that everything is fine. There is no other place as relaxing and secure as his crib in his room.

Choose if you prefer to sing a simple song, a one liner that you keep repeating as you walk out, or if you feel better with a constant “sh sh” as you walk out. The point is that whatever sound you make fades as you walk out the door, so your baby knows you are walking out and is not surprised in case he wakes up and you are no longer in his room.

  40. Why does the crying stop when I take my baby out of the crib?

Why does the crying stop when I take my baby out of the crib?

Because he loves you and because you make him feel like you have rescued him from his crib.

Still, remember that the bed and darkness are his friends. Do not walk in and rescue him from what may be your interpretation of a situation that is really perfectly okay. Maybe you were forced into a dark room as a baby or child and were left alone with no attention, so you do not want to do this to your baby. This is understandable.

Remember though that it is only a matter of how you introduce darkness to your baby. Start with the day and night rhythm, just open the curtains a bit when your newborn is awake, keep him in darkness during all of his sleeps. Think of the production of the hormone melatonin, the darker the room, the more is produced, the more tired he gets and the better he sleeps. Turn off the lamp together or dim the light, this helps a lot.

Make the crib his friend, for example only allow the dummy in the crib and get rid of it later.

  41. What time do you suggest for maximum bedtime at night?

What time do you suggest for maximum bedtime at night?

If you want to wake up by 7 am you should put your baby down by 8pm.

Bedtime always depends on wake up time.

Allow at least 11 hours for good night sleep and distribute the naps accordingly. But going to bed by 10pm and getting up by 7am just does not work.

Do not allow exceptions that let your baby or toddler stay up long at night, because then he thinks that going to bed early is not a must, when in fact they are and he should be looking forward to bedtime. Of course there are cultures where social life is in the evening so bedtime is at 10pm, waking up by 8am and then a long afternoon nap of at least 3 hours. If the hours of sleep sum up in the end, then it is ok.

  42. How can I avoid the sugar buzz?

How can I avoid the sugar buzz?

Do not feed your baby anything that contains unhealthy sugar, especially not before its time to sleep.

Breast milk contains sugar, so does formula, milk, rice drinks, and so on. Those sugars are considered healthy and do not give a sugar buzz.

Industrial sugars are the ones that spin your baby out. You can count the time. It takes around 15 minutes for the sugar to be in the system, and from then on you are looking at a good half hour of no sleep in sight. If the sugar buzz hits a baby who is already tired, he will have a complete breakdown soon, so be ready to put him down at first his sign.

  43. What if my baby is still on the dummy and snuggler?

What if my baby is still on the dummy and snuggler?

    Have dummy and snuggler ready.

There is nothing wrong with his dummy or snuggler as long as your baby has it. So you have to make sure he has it.

This means you'll have to invest in a stash. Spread dummies in all four corners of the crib. Have one in the car, one in the stroller, your jacket, your backpack, and so forth. Same just not as much accounts for snugglers.

The other option is to slowly but steadily take the snuggler and dummy away or at least only allow it in the crib. That way the status of the crib rises instantly, and your life gets easier.

How can I nurse my baby at night?

Never turn on the light or talk or interact with him at night.

It is perfectly fine to nurse your baby at night.

Just remember two things: first, you do not want to disturb his sleep, so do not talk or interact with him. Second, you do not want him to fall asleep on your boob. As you feel him dozing off, take out the nipple gently. She will refuse, but assure him that it's all okay and that he can fall asleep. You want him to remember that he fell asleep with no nipple in his mouth, so that when he wakes up he does not expect it to be in his mouth.

  45. My newborn sleeps only in my arms, what can I do?

My newborn sleeps only in my arms, what can I do?

Don’t let it become a pattern.

This is how sleep problems start. Your baby has gotten used to falling asleep in your arms while you nurse or rock him. You put him down asleep from your arms into his crib, and then later when he wakes up he does not feel your body anymore, he wants it back and he will cry for it. You are likely to pick him up again and try to soothe him and rock him back to sleep, just to put him down and experience the same scenario as the next time marker comes up.

You need to start putting him down drowsy but awake and soothe him IN his crib. No more rocking on you to make him fall asleep.

  46. Is there one schedule that suits most babies?

Is there one schedule that suits most babies?

No. Read your baby and tweak the schedule that fits.

There is no sleep schedule that works for all babies. This is why you can customize the sleep schedules that Sleep Sheriff offers.

Keep in mind the rough estimates of how much sleep your baby needs at his age, consider his habits as they are now and decide if you can live with his habits or prefer to tweak them, and then do so.

Remember that every schedule is only good for so long, as your baby will have different needs at different ages and times. Think of teething, colds, illnesses, growth spurs, moon phases and the like. Sleep Sheriff can only do his job if you as a parent do your job, which is reading your baby and reacting appropriately. Love is all he needs.

  47. Does a routine disturb natural sleep phases?

Does a routine disturb natural sleep phases?

A routine ensures a long calm good night sleep, which is the basis for sleep phases.

A routine does not influence sleep phases or suggest the feeling of being tired when in fact it would not be time to be. It is only the introduction of a new routine that changes existing patterns.

The point with Sleep Sheriff is that adopting a new routine and the ability to fall asleep and to fall back asleep go hand in hand with the coaching. Your baby will still wake up according to individual sleep phases and will fall back asleep all by himself, whereas sometimes he might just surface a bit and then sink back in deep without even waking up.

  48. What about moon phases?

    What about moon phases?

Acknowledge and respect that the moon has a major influence on earth and especially on babies.

Be alert and ready at the time markers so you can help your baby through those critical moments.

Most babies are sensitive to moon phases. Typically, full moon and new moon and the two following days can be tough.

In this case it is especially important that you focus on the time markers and be ready to walk in at the slightest noise. Remember that once the baby has fallen asleep, he sinks in deep and at the critical times (5, 15, 45 etc.) comes back up to the surface and is prone to waking up.

If you keep those markers in mind and make sure you are ready to walk in, you will get him to fall back asleep easily just with a bit of petting and “sh sh”. Just love.

Can vaccinations have an influence on sleep?

Acknowledge and respect the fact that a vaccination might have had a negative effect on your baby.

Consult your naturopath or homeopath for further assistance.

Experience shows that babies who used to have a good sleep rhythm dropped it after a vaccination. All of a sudden sleep problems of all sorts arise, and the parents are left with no information or advice.

    What is the digest-the-day nap?

This little afternoon nap takes away the pressure from all day.

Imagine how many impressions your baby absorbs throughout the day.

Most of them are new and your baby needs to digest them. If your baby has no digest-the-day nap, he would need to process all he experienced all day in his good night sleep, and this would probably cause him to wake up.

At what age can my baby sleep in his crib in his room?

Sleep Sheriff suggests that with four months of age your baby can sleep in his own room.

Four months is when most sleep problems start, but coaching in the parents' bed just does not work. You would be disturbing your baby in his sleep and project all your doubts onto your baby. That is why it is best for the baby to sleep in his crib at this time.

My newborn sleeps just fine; will he ever have sleep problems?

Your baby will lose his natural sleep routine at the age of four months, so get ready.

Most babies sleep through the night until 6 weeks, and then have a natural sleep routine, which they lose after 4 months.

It has to do with the sleep phases and how close to the surface they get in their sleep. This new pattern starts developing at around four months of age. Before this age, it used to be a flat sleep curve relatively deep and far from the surface. So prepare your self with all you can.

Read here and start planning your sleep schedule. Read your baby and all will be easy.

  54. What can I do to avoid future sleep problems?

What can I do to avoid future sleep problems?

Introduce fixed wake up and go to bed times and start at 4 months of age to introduce a routine.

Babies are small and fragile, and they want to be rocked and held and soothed and everything. However, at four months of age it is time to get real and make sure your baby has a sleep and feed schedule.

The earlier you start with fixed times for waking up and going to bed, the easier it is to introduce a fixed nap time, and there you have a baby-developed schedule with almost no effort from your side.

Be persistent and do not allow sleep supports to turn into sleep associations, so make sure that you always put him down drowsy but awake and walk away from him with love and “sh sh” so he can fall asleep alone. It is that simple.

  55. What is your best tip on twins?

What is your best tip on twins?

Twins are hard work but then later, starting around three years of age, all your efforts are rewarded.

Crucial to twins' sleep is making sure no noise or other dangers of waking up prevail around the time markers.

There is nothing wrong fitting one's room out with walls like a music studio. The point is that if one twin wakes up, he will most probably wake up the other one, because her crying is precisely at the time marker.

Have them in separate rooms at home, have them in one room when traveling, follow your routine, and be alert at the time markers. In case the room lets noise in, always anticipate that you'll have to take one in your bed to ensure the other does not wake up.

  2. What do I do if we travel time zones?

What do I do if we travel time zones?

Flow with the new day night rhythm and adjust gradually.

Traveling time zones is a tricky one. First of all, don't freak out. Realize that it is hard for you to adapt to a different time zone, so you can imagine how hard it may be for your baby.

Make the day and night rhythm your friend. Tell your baby that it is getting dark, stars and moon are out, have him see the night and tell him that all babies sleep when it's dark. Remember the dark room to fake day night rhythms in case the time zones differences are huge.

Use all your repertoire of help to get him into the new rhythm, once he has it, slowly take away your supports one by one. This accounts for naps and sleep. Remember to shut out light and noise from his room. Embrace the fact that traveling comes at a cost.

Be careful to be aware of it when it comes to planning your next trip. Ask yourself if traveling so far is worth the effort or if you might want to put the trip off until a later stage. Be real about it.

  3. What do I do if my baby has grown and I need to change the routine?

What do I do if my baby has grown and I need to change the routine?

Reduce or cut the naps first, think of the night sleep later.

Babies react differently to routines after growth spurts or just over time, and they may not need as much sleep as they once did. So either their naps are too short or they wake up too early in the morning. This means that you'll have to take a good look at his schedule and tweak it to your liking.

You have a couple of different options:

Reduce the length of one nap
    Cut out one nap
Reduce the length of the good night's sleep

If you decide to reduce the length of one nap, choose wisely, as this is the nap that you'll eventually cut out all together first. In case your baby still has two morning naps, reduce and then cut the second morning nap. In case the baby has three naps (morning, noon, afternoon), reduce the morning one.

If you need your baby to keep all naps because this is the time you really need for yourself to do your things, then reduce the length of the night's sleep, but think about your decision wisely and contemplate if you'd better change your daily routine in favor of the baby's good night sleep.

The afternoon nap is so important because the baby digests the whole day so he can fall asleep relaxed. Otherwise he has to deal with the impressions of the whole afternoon while falling asleep and at night, so he will be restless instead of relaxed and calm.

    How do I reduce naps?

No matter what you do, keep the noon nap for as long as you can.

keep the long noon nap for as long as you can
reduce or lose the second morning nap first
    reduce the afternoon digest-the-day nap
reduce or lose the first morning nap
lose the afternoon / digest-the-day nap

Gently wake him up as she reaches the surface in her sleep, which is exactly at the time markers. Do it three days in a row and he’ll have adopted a new routine.

  5. How do I extend a nap?

How do I extend a nap?

    Do it bit by bit.

This is how you change the sleep routine of your baby in order to match the sleep schedule you have selected or customized.

Put your baby down 5 minutes earlier for his nap each day until you have reached the desired naptime. Be at his crib at the time he is likely to wake up or come to the surface of his sleep so that you can “sh sh” and pet him back to sleep easily.

    For example:

Your baby naps from 12:30 – 13:30, but you want him to nap from 12:00 – 13:30. On the first day, put him down at 12:25 and be at his crib from 13:25- 13:30. On the next day, put him down at 12:20 and be back next to his crib from 13:20 – 13:30. On the next day, put his down at 12:15 and be back at his crib from 13:15 – 13:30, and so on. So all together, you will need 6 days to change his schedule. Make sure his room is dark.

  6. How can I extend his sleep?

How can I extend his sleep?

    Do it bit by bit.

Put your baby down 5 minutes earlier for his good night sleep each night until you have reached the desired go to bedtime. Be at his crib at the time he is likely to wake up or come to the surface of his sleep so that you can “sh sh” and pet him back to sleep easily.

    For example:

Your baby goes to bed at 19:30 and sleeps until 07:30, but you want him to go to bed at 19:00 and still sleep until 07:30. On the first day, put his down at 19:25 and be at his crib at 07:25 – 07:30. On the next night, put his down at 19:20 and be at his crib at 07:20 – 07:30. On the next night put his down at 19:15 and be at his crib at 07:15 – 07:30, and so on. So all together you will need 6 days to change his schedule. Make sure his room is completely dark.

  7. What do I do if my baby is teething or has a cold?

What do I do if my baby is teething or has a cold?

Let him sleep however long he wants and relax because a new routine takes 3-5 days to take on.

Putting sleep associations aside, pain and breathing difficulty are the first two reasons why your baby wakes up from his naps or at night. You need to know for yourself how far you want to go in terms of medication to facilitate the napping and sleep routine. Remember that a small pillow under the mattress already lifts the head and you baby can breath much easier in his crib.

Note the difference between cough syrups, some facilitate coughing up the mucus - use them for daytime, others suppress the need to cough - use them in the evening. Homeopathies are a great call and come in handy at night and so does a snot sucker. Of course you see a practitioner that you trust in case the conditions get worse.

Remember to let your baby sleep whenever he is tired. Sleep is the best cure. Say he falls asleep an hour before his scheduled nap, let him go to bed and push him through so in the end he wakes up as if he would normally, except now he has slept an hour longer. You'll find it easier to get back to the routine with a healthy baby than to stick to the routine and have a poor little thing.

  8. Why do you suggest belly down?

Why do you suggest belly down?

Belly down is a baby's natural sleeping position, works best for petting and reduces risk of suffocation.

Advantages of having your baby sleep belly down are:

Reduced probability of a flat back of his head
    Easy petting
Easy breathing and coughing in case of colds and clogged noses
Baby feels safe and secure having his belly protected

In the beginning you might be reluctant to switching him over to belly down in case he fell asleep somewhere else, such as on the boob, in the car, in your arms feeding him, on your shoulder, etc. However once you have that move wired, it's to easy. He’ll find his snuggler and dummy by himself (in case you let him have it), and will have a calm night. If he turns on his side, no problem, let him do what he wants in his sleep, as you walk in to check on him (if you feel the need) you can always turn him back belly down, he won't wake up. What counts is that you can only pet him properly on his butt if he is belly down.

  9. What do I do if my baby thinks it is time to get up?

What do I do if my baby thinks it is time to get up?

Make him understand that it is still night and not time to get up yet.

Anticipate him waking up and be ready before he wakes up.

You say when it is time to get up. Remember that what you want is equally important as what is best for your baby. Of course the room must be dark and quiet. Okay, here is the deal: When your baby wakes up, note the exact time. For the next morning, set your alarm clock 10 minutes before the time your baby wakes up and thinks the day starts.

The next day quietly enter his room and walk to the crib, be ready to do the exact same thing you did as your baby fell asleep. Did you sing, pet him, “sh sh” him? Whatever it was, do the same as he starts to wakes up, as soon as your baby does the first moves with head, arms or legs. You don't even want your baby to wake up, make sure you catch him just as his sleep reaches the surface level so that he sinks in again. Timing is key.

  10. Is it that important that the same person does the coaching over all modules?

Is it that important that the same person does the coaching over all modules?

Coaching over three weeks is easy, two weeks is realistic, ten days is possible, and one week is hard.

It takes three to five days for a person to adopt a new routine.

Think of introducing a sporty lifestyle, changing eating habits, giving up smoking, or in our case here, adopting a slightly new sleep routine.

Once the schedule has been internalized, it becomes a routine, which in the first week continuously has to be supported and positively reassured.

You develop a very deep relation with your baby; you soon anticipate his needs and can read his emotions and interpret his crying.

You are the best coach for your baby, but if you know you will not have so much time, then your partner has to know exactly what's going on. Fact is that the same person must be on it for a week, so do the first couple of days coaching and then give intense support over the next days. Then the partner can take over. In this case all other factors must be on spot - think of the darkening out the room, full on consequence on sleep associations and supports, and so forth. You must be switched on.

  11. What if my baby seems tired but it is not time for him to sleep yet?

What if my baby seems tired but it is not time for him to sleep yet?

Learn to read your baby for signs of being tired and if tired put him down immediately.

Decide for yourself how far away from the next scheduled nap or good night sleep you are.

Calculate how long the drive home will take you in case you are in the car. In any case, the time markers are important: If you are still far, and your baby falls asleep, you can turn the music on at 5 minutes, 20 minutes or 45 minutes to help him wake up.

If you are close to the next scheduled nap or good night sleep, put him down and watch the time markers. You do not want to undress or transfer him to his crib at 5 minutes, 20 minutes or 45 minutes. Be ready to help him sink back down deep from the surface.

In case he wakes up as you transfer him over, “sh sh” and give him love but no attention. In case his eyes are wide open tell him you are moving him to his crib and everything is ok.

  12. How do I introduce a sleep routine?

How do I introduce a sleep routine?

Read the routine that your baby has and tweak it to how it should be.

    Here is what you do.

Detect the routine your baby has, watch him for a week and note all times that he starts to sleep, wakes up, falls asleep again, wakes up, eats, drinks, plays, gets tired, falls asleep, etc..

Compare all the notes after a week and you'll get a feel for your baby’s rhythm. Then think of what would be your preferred routine for your baby.

Consider your needs and wants as well as how much sleep your baby needs at his age.

Then, either come up with your own custom routine, or tweak one of the schedules that we provide here or you know from friends or other sources.

You just want to make sure you and your baby gets what works best for your family.

Once you have decided on the schedule, stick to it.

Can I coach nap and good night sleep at the same time?

Sleep Sheriff coaches falling asleep and falling back asleep, so we coach sleeping through, no matter if it’s a nap or the good night's sleep.

Sleep Sheriff is based on a routine with which you coach your baby to be able to fall asleep all by himself, he will soon be able to fall back asleep all by himself.

Natural sleep rhythms, noise, nursing, and a great variety of other causes make a baby almost wake up and sometimes even wake up at night or during a nap, but a sleep coached baby just falls back asleep and wakes up at the roughly scheduled wake up time, whether that's a nap or the good night sleep.

Choose your schedule, set your Sleep Sheriff and let him coach you.

What is the benefit of a digital watch?

A digital watch gives the perfect amount of light that you need for nursing or finding the dummy etc.

Most people use cellphones to see what time it is, but the benefit of a clock or watch is that it's just there and will almost never run out of power.

In a pitch black room, the built in light of a digital watch is enough to make you see what counts: corners, furniture, low ceilings, lost dummies, cough syrup, wet wipes and diapers.

Remember that you never want to turn on the light in case your baby wakes up too soon, during a nap or nighttime sleep.

  15. How do I introduce a routine to twins?

How do I introduce a routine to twins?

Separate their rooms and coach one first, then help the other.

Twins are hard work. Twins are such hard work.

Besides all of the other chores no single child parent can imagine, the noise level is outrageous, and this is what matters here.

You want to plan the sleep situation; no matter if for naps or good night's sleep.

First of all, try to have your twins in different rooms, at least for as long as you need to help them find their routine.

Once they are accustomed to their routine, they will be tired, sleeping, and getting up almost at the same time. Make sure the doors to their rooms are sealed off so no noise gets in or out. If you need to, apply a sponge to the inside of the door so the noise does not get out.

We are talking about angry upset furious crying as well as crying because of teething or the like. In homes with thin gypsum walls you might even want to think of how music studios reduce their noise.

Introducing the routine for naps in the stroller is tricky if you have a twin stroller. If you can, borrow a single stroller and create the best environment for one baby to sleep while your partner does the same with the other.

Remember that it is you who tells them when it is time to eat, drink, and sleep. Yes, in the beginning it might seem most natural to respond to every individual need of your twins, but soon you will realize that self-preservation and self-protection is also very important in these situations.

No mater how you slice it, you want your twins to eat, drink and sleep at the same time, and you can do it. One twin at a time, with the other twin's noise shut out.

For the nights, do one baby at a time. Fully focus on the schedule and introduce the new routine gently to one baby while the other is still dependent on mama or papa to fall asleep. Do this for a week then switch to the other baby while your partner supports the other.

Always remember that twins might look alike but have their own personalities. You as a parent know your babies better than anyone, and you can tell who is crying and why.

  16. Will my baby survive a whole night without drinking?

Will my baby survive a whole night without drinking?

Have him checked, but most babies can sleep through without drinking after 8 months.

How many times do you have to get up at night because you are hungry or thirsty? Supposed you have no eating disorder, you sleep the whole night through, and wake up healthy and alive the next morning. Just as your baby. The reference here is that at around 8 months of age, babies no longer need to be fed at night. Before 8 months it is normal for babies to wake up and drink up to 4 times a night.

Again, it comes down to sleep associations. In other words, make sure your baby does not fall asleep while still sucking on the breast or bottle. As soon as you realize the sucking for milk turns into a sucking for comfort, your baby will doze off soon. Take the nipple or bottle out gently. If he refuses, put it back in and again wait for that moment before he dozes off and try again. Just repeat it until your baby no longer needs the boob or bottle to fall asleep, and soon you will know how many times he really needs to drink.

  17. Does my baby need the nipple, the bottle or the dummy at night?

Does my baby need the nipple, the bottle or the dummy at night?

All your baby needs at night is love and fresh air.

No baby needs the nipple, bottle or dummy at night after 4 months of age. Sometimes babies need to suck on the dummy because during the process of birth, their skull bones have been slightly displaced and sucking gets them back in position. Your osteopath can tell you more about it.

The topic here is that you are in the process of taking away something that your baby wants and has been used to, for the sake of sleeping through the night. Again it comes down to the same thing: your baby wakes up and possibly cannot fall back asleep because when he fell asleep, the environment was different from the environment he has woken up in. In other words, your baby wakes up and complains that the nipple, bottle or dummy is gone. What you need to do is slowly take it away from him as he dozes off just before he falls asleep.

  18. How can I take away the nipple, bottle or dummy?

How can I take away the nipple, bottle or dummy?

Just take it out of his mouth before he dozes off, if he refuses, let him have it, then try again.

A great way to get the nipple, bottle or dummy out of the baby's mouth is to insert your little finger just beside the nipple, bottle or dummy. You'll feel your baby sucking on your little finger and you can slowly take it out of his mouth when you feel the sucking is getting less and your baby starts dozing off.

In the beginning your baby will refuse and get wild. He’ll complain to you, so for the sake of not letting him cry and get energized again, you want to keep him in that tired state, so you insert the nipple, bottle or dummy again. Let him suck and wait for the signs that he is about to doze off: non-rhythmic sucking, less vacuum, less noise, then slowly take it out of his mouth again. If your baby refuses again, then back in, later back out. Just repeat it until finally your baby dozes off with nothing in his mouth. Sure, if you let it in, your baby falls asleep in no time, but you know that this leads to a full on sleep association.

  19. How about feeding right before sleep?

How about feeding right before sleep?

    Fill him up.

No doubt, the easiest way to get your baby to sleep through the night is to fill him up at least 30 minutes before you put him down. The more calories your baby takes in before his sleep, the easier he’ll sleep through the night. Some parents even add butter in the bottle, and others use semolina. Anything that is digested easily and is rich in calories does the job. However, just breast milk is fine. Just make sure he drinks more than enough.

Note that any calories from sugar or the like will keep your baby from falling asleep and will likely disrupt his sleep as well. You can also give him the breast as you go to bed, so he has another full sip and you get the maximum amount out of the first stretch of your sleep.

  20. What should I know about the week after introducing the routine?

What should I know about the week after introducing the routine?

The week after is crucial; make sure the same person keeps helping.

Keep the time markers in mind, anticipate and be ready to react.

Over the past couple of days your baby learned how to fall asleep all by himself or with only a little help. Now it is time to reinforce the routine, and your baby needs all your focus and attention. Walk in the room at the first little noise, whether it’s crying or just irregular breathing, coughing, or maybe a bad dream. You want to be petting and “sh sh-ing” before your baby even wakes up. You want to catch him in that wakeup phase.

Do not let any other person like the other parent or a grandparent take over because you are tired or have other obligations. You are the coach, no one else knows your baby's sleep behavior as well.

  23. How do I introduce a nap routine?

How do I introduce a nap routine?

Work on the times first and think of the crib later.

For the naps, here is what you do:

Introduce the (new) routine with the stroller or car until he falls asleep and wakes up according to the schedule. If he wakes up earlier, put the dummy back in, “sh sh” him, rock him in the stroller or search for that next gravel bit to rock him some more, do what you know works with your baby.

Once he is settled in the routine with the stroller, put him in his darkened room awake in his stroller, rock and “sh sh” him to sleep and then let the stroller stand alone with no movement while he sleeps. Be attentive and rock him back to sleep when he wakes up. Think of his dummy too if he has (lost) one.

Once he is settled in the routine with the stroller in the darkened room, put him in his crib and pet him on the butt to resemble the stroller movement. Be attentive.

Think of the crucial markers when the sleep gets light (5, 15, 45, etc. minutes).

Once he is settled in the routine in the crib, reduce the petting and all other helps. Done. Do not lose it. Remember those markers and make sure the noise is down until he falls back into a deeper sleep.

  26. Is there anything in particular that I should keep in mind?

Is there anything in particular that I should keep in mind?

    Do what you feel.

It is perfectly fine to condition your baby towards a healthy nap and sleep routine. Your baby will wake up according to individual sleep phases and will fall back asleep all by himself.

Sleep Sheriff does not tell you what to do but suggests solutions that work for most babies.

Sleep Sheriff wants happy babies and loving parents who understand how sleeping works.

Sleep Sheriff can only do his job if you as a parent do your job, which is reading your baby and reacting appropriately. Love is all he needs.

If you feel you are being slack, get yourself together.

Choose your schedule, set your Sleep Sheriff and let him coach you. Be 100% committed and stick through it once you have started. The more time and energy you put into the first two weeks of the coaching, the better the outcome and the less follow up you have to do. The more time and energy you put into the first months, the easier the months to come, and the more time and energy you put into the first year, the smoother will it all be, no matter where you travel.

  28. How long until I start seeing results?

How long until I start seeing results?

Every change in routine takes 3-5 days to become a pattern.

Some babies adopt a new routine quicker than others, but within the first week you will see results. Your baby might already sleep through in the second night, who knows?

Sleeping through the night of course varies for different ages. A 4-month-old baby is considered to be sleeping through if he does not wake up for five hours. However, a toddler is considered to be sleeping through the night if he spends most of the night asleep and can fall back asleep by himself after waking up.

The more dedicated and accurate you are the better the results. Choose your schedule, set your Sleep Sheriff and let him coach you.

  29. How do I introduce a good night's sleep routine?

How do I introduce a good night's sleep routine?

Work on the wake up and go to bed times first, think of the sleep through later.

For the good night's sleep your strategy is similar to the nap strategy.

All you need to remember is that you want your baby to wake up (if he does) in the same environment he fell asleep in, so that he can easily fall back asleep all by himself or with only a little of your involvement.

If you feel like once he wakes up you can only calm him down again in his stroller, then let him fall asleep in the stroller in the first place, no problem.

It is all about introducing fixed sleep times and making him sleep through the night. Do this for the first couple of nights until you feel your baby has internalized the routine and falls back asleep easily, maybe just with a bit of rocking.

The following nights, instead of the stroller, gradually introduce letting him fall asleep in his crib on his belly and pet him on his butt to resemble the stroller movement. Accompany the rocking with a “sh sh” sound. The more tired he gets, the less you pet him, and remember your aim is that you want him to fall asleep all by himself, dozing off without your help. Sing that one liner or continue the “sh sh” and walk out of his room.

You can replace one sleep support with another that is not as hard to get rid of later on, and gradually you help your baby fall asleep with no help, which means that he'll also be able to fall back asleep with no help, all by himself.

  30. How can I turn a schedule into a routine?

How can I turn a schedule into a routine?

Introduce the schedule and be persistent for at least two weeks.

A schedule has something orderly and rigid about it and reminds one of school or work. In any case, it indicates something to adhere to and if neglected, has consequences lurking. Let the schedule be your friend. Detect a natural routine in your baby and see if you can tweak it so that it matches what you think would work best for your family. Once you decide on a schedule, stick to it.

Remember that any change within a baby's schedule takes three to five days to turn into a routine, so be prepared to go the full length of five days and expect the following week to be on high alert, both to remember the schedule, and to follow it. In case you have not memorized the schedule yet, hang it up on the fridge or a place you frequently stop to have a look at.

Making this schedule become a routine is not only good for your baby, but also for yourself, as you have your days organized and know from when to when you have time to do your things.

  31. Do I really have to stick to the times by the minute?

Do I really have to stick to the times by the minute?

The more you stick to the schedule, the sooner it will be a routine.

Choose your schedule, set your Sleep Sheriff and let her coach you. You and your baby need to internalize a schedule to make it become a routine.

The more you stick to the times, the more often you look at your watch, the more complete you prepare everything in time, the more focused the ritual, the darker the room, in other words the more energy you put into it. So yes, stick to the times by the minute, you will know when you can give it some more room.

  32. Does my baby have to be in bed until the scheduled wake up time?

Does my baby have to be in bed until the scheduled wake up time?

    Give it many tries.

Of course it would be best if your baby stayed in his crib until wake up time, but the older they get the harder it is to do.

At least keep your baby in your arms but do not walk out of the dark room until wake up time and eventually this rhythm will sink in.

A dark room means a lot of melatonin, which is the hormone responsible for being tired and sleeping.

  33. What do I do if I used to have a routine but no longer have one?

What do I do if I used to have a routine but no longer have one?

Go back to day one, read the manual, and follow the instructions.

The longer we live with a new routine, schedule, and plan, the more we tend to let go of the reigns, loosen up the times and allow ourselves and our baby to be late for food, naps, baths, and sleep.

We let him sleep in the car, in the stroller, just because we think that we have cracked it and nothing can ever go wrong again.

If all were fine, you wouldn't be reading this now. Remember that since you let go of the reigns, your baby has grown. She might no longer need as much sleep, and he might have developed his own rhythm.

Look at sleep requirements for his age and see if his rhythm works, if yes, see if it also works for you. If yes, cool, if no, it is time to get back and redo what you have already successfully done: introduce a routine to your baby. It'll only be three to five days followed by a firm follow up week.

  34. How do I pat my baby?

How do I pat my baby?

Pat him as gently as you can.
